In recent years, the use of krill oil supplements has gained considerable importance. Krill oil is derived from krill. It is a tiny shrimp similar to a crustacean. Euphausia superb is its biological name.  Krill has a length of approximately 1-6cm. Krill mainly thrives in the Antarctic Ocean. Thus, it is also called Antarctic krill. It feeds on phytoplanktons. They are rich in antioxidants.  Other marine animals such as squids, seals and penguins eat krill. Even whales eat it too. In Japan, krill is known as a delicacy called okami.

The oil obtained from krill can be purchased as a nutritional supplement.  The extracted oil is available in capsule form. It can be bought in any drugstore.

Benefits of Krill Oil

Krill oil has a remarkable nutritional value. If krill oil supplements are included in the diet, you can have a wide range of its benefits. Krill oil has small amounts of vitamins E, A and D, omega-3 fatty acids and an antioxidant called astaxanthin.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Krill oil is a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids primarily EPA or eicosapentaenoic acid and also DHA or docosahexaenoic acid.  Both acids are present in phospholipids in order to provide easy cellular absorption.  DHA provides numerous health benefits. It is an essential component necessary during pregnancy period.  According to studies, DHA helps in the development of the eyes and brain of the unborn child. It regulates the level of cholesterol. As a result, it minimizes the risk of hypertension, heart attacks as well as other cardiovascular diseases.  Furthermore, it helps reduce levels of blood sugar.  DHA is proven to alleviate the inflammation caused by rheumatoid arthritis.


Krill eat phytoplanktons which produce astaxanthin. It is a bright red-colored pigment that is responsible for the reddish pink color of the krill. The astaxanthin in krill is a hundred percent esterified. Hence, this is completely absorbed in the body.  It is capable of crossing the blood-brain barrier. It also protects the skin and eyes from the harmful radiation of UV. In addition, it helps in regulating the hormones.  It is known to be useful in reducing the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome.

Krill oil supplements have small amounts of vitamins E, D and A. Since these vitamins are soluble to fat, they can be easily absorbed in the body.
